Vana Koutsomitis, a runner-up on the reality TV show inspired by businessmen and women, ‘The Apprentice’, has successfully raised and exceeded her crowdfunding target of $159,439.20 (£120,000) for her dating application, DatePlay. The crowdfunding was done through Seedrs, an equity crowdfunding platform.
The crowdfunding campaign lasted for one month and raised $231,220.84 (£174,040) from 215 investors. Koutsomitis said, “I am absolutely thrilled that we reached our goal in less than three days. I hope that this will also inspire other women to follow their dreams to raise funds for their tech startups.”
The firm said that they will no longer accept pledges once they reach a total of $398,565 (￡300,000). The Apprentice boss turned down Koutsomitis’ dating app which is why Koutsomitis is strongly standing behind her idea, saying, “We want everyone to come on board to prove Lord Sugar wrong.”
Currently, the app is under development. The funds secured will be utilized primarily for marketing. Koutsomitis cofounded DatePlay together with Joris Magenti, her friend from Oxford University.
According to Koutsomitis, their app is different from other dating platforms, including Match.com, Tinder, and Happn. The app will utilize interactive games in an attempt to understand the customer’s personality prior to recommending potential matches.
Koutsomitis said, “The difference between DatePlay and the others is that we add an element of fun to the dating experience by integrating games into the interface. Tinder can engage you for short periods of time but once you have enough matches and once you’ve swiped left and right enough times, you start to get a little bit crazy. You’re just like, over it.”
