July 11, 2015 – NEW YORK — Investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, academicians and business angels converged for the Graphene Week that took place from 22-26 June 2015 at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. As a one billion Euro program, Graphene Flagship is aimed at moving graphene from the academe to the market place. The focus of this year’s Graphene week included technology, science and emerging grapheme applications in relation to hetero-structures and 2D materials. Graphene is an atomic-scale honeycomb lattice made of carbon atoms.
According to LDJ Capital, The Soho Loft Media Group and Victoria Global Chairman David Drake, the Flagship #investor Event at the Graphene Week offers an ideal opportunity for investors and entrepreneurs to interact about graphene whose market has reached $20 million in 2014. According to a report from IDTechEx, the graphene markets will increase to more than $390 million by 2024 at the material level.
The Graphene Week held many activities, with “The 9th International Conference on the Fundamental Science of Graphene and Applications of Graphene-Based Devices” on the forefront. The conference covered the following topics: Fundamental physics of graphene and related 2D materials; Chemistry and biology studies of graphene; Applications of graphene and related 2D materials in electronics, photonics, spintronics, and sensors; Applications of graphene in energy, including photovoltaics, energy storage, fuel cells and hydrogen storage; Graphene-based nanocomposites:
The Graphene Week 2015 Conference was chaired by Dr. Cinzia Casiraghi. Experts from different countries spoke during the conference, that included:
Artem Mishchenko – University of Manchester
Barry Brennan – Researcher, UK National Physical Laboratory
Christoph Tegenkamp – Leibniz University in Hannover
Guillermo Lopez-Polin – Madrid-based researcher
Gui-Ping Dai – Nanchang University l
Jonathan Eroms – Researcher, Regensburg University
Ivan Marun – University of Manchester
Kostya Novoselov – University of Manchester, UK
Leonardo Vicarelli – Delft University of Technology
Matthias Mecklenburg – Technical University of Berlin
Pertti Hakonen – Aalto University
Petr Stepanov – University of California Riverside
Philip Kim – Harvard University, USA
Rodney S. Ruoff – UNIST, Korea
Satoru Masubuchi – Tokyo University
Siamak Nakhaie – Paul-Drude Institute in Berlin
Shu-Jen Han – IBM, Thomas J. Research Center, USA
Sukanya Dhar – Indian Institute of Science
Timothy Booth- Technical University in Denmark
Tom Yager – Chalmers University in Göteborg
Wolfgang Templ – Alcatel-Lucent Deutschland AG, Germany
The University of Manchester also organised a series of industry focused workshops within the Graphene Week 2015. The workshops focused on the commercialisation of graphene applications, which took place in the National Graphene Institute (NGI). The workshops engaged the public sector business supporters, manufacturing businesses and industry leaders; and increase their awareness and knowledge of graphene and other 2D materials.
Graphene Focus, an open forum, was also held during the week. Flagship director Jari Kinaret started the panel discussion by providing an overview of the structure and functions of the consortium. Five flagship representatives served in the panel. Industrialists researchers and the general public posed questions to the panel.
Moreover, an original graphene inspired composition ‘Graphene Suite’ by Sara Lowes was unveiled during the concluded Graphene Week 2015. It is a musical composition using guitars, strings, trumpets, oboe and synthesizers. It highlights two processes, scientific discovery and composition.
The Graphene Week 2015 Conference is supported by the National Graphene Institute, the City of Manchester and University of Manchester. The Graphene Flagship is commissioned and funded by the European Commission.
The 2016 Graphene Week will be held in Warsaw, Poland.
